Feeling that the East Coast World Maker Faire New York was heavily skewed toward technology makers, the Faire staff reached out to HONK NYC! Festival Steward Sara Valentine in hopes that HONK NYC! could help diversify the types of creativity represented at the Faire.
As a result, this past weekend one hundred twenty HONK NYC! musicians and artists joined the throngs on the Faire grounds at the New York Hall of Science, making a playful, analog, creative space; roving musical entertainment; festival how-tos and offering Sonic Massages.
We had bands Dja-Rara, Funkrust, Baritone Army, Hungry March Band, Himalayas, Batala NYC, and Bond Street Theatre’s Shinbone Alley Stilt Band.
Our large “booth” was like the fairway at a circus- festively festooned, with activities, merch sales and performances throughout both days. Featuring creative reuse costume making by Alita Edgar and Tracy Gilman, instrument building by Gisela Torino and Aimee Rosato, and t-shirt cutting and weaving by Lynn Stabile, Deinya Phenix and Jill Woodward.
Kenny Wollesen & the Wollesenic Lab’s Sonic Massage was full to capacity in each session throughout the weekend. Participants would lie in a circle with their eyes closed and let the sounds of the Lab’s homemade instruments wash over them creating a relaxing and transcendental experience.
Although everyone involved was ecstatic at the participation and feedback of the crowds, our success was validated further with the award of 12 Editor’s Choice Ribbons! Four for the booth; eight to individual artists Stacy Kovacs & Batala NYC, Dja-Rara, and Kenny Wollesen & the Wollesenic Lab’s Sonic Massage.
Everyone involved was inspired and super-excited by the experience, and we are already brainstorming ideas for next year’s Faire! Many thanks to the organizers and all our new friends!
