Our next featured musician is Greg Squared of Raya Brass Band.
The campaign to support Greg and our other 195+ musicians ends in 15 days!!
Greg grew up in East Lansing, Michigan. At the age of 19 he left Michigan for San Diego, where he lived for 9 years. He then moved to New York in 2000, to play at the Coney Island Mermaid Parade with the Hungry March Band. With the exception of some extended travels, New York City has been his home for the last fourteen years.
He says, “Raya Brass Band has been together for going on six years now. By and large, we met at the Eastern European Folklife Center’s annual Balkan Music and Dance workshop and the associated Balkan folk dance scene.”
Some of his favorite venues in New York City are Barbès (best vibe ever), littlefield (great sound system/engineers), and Rough Trade NYC (great sound system/engineers).
When asked what he thinks the greatest challenge for musicians today, Greg says “Rent is too damn high! Pay is too damn low!”
As for dream tours, he has never been to Japan, but he’d like to go. Also “India, Turkey and the Middle East.”
Greg’s parting thought? “Life’s too short for drama.”
Amen to that! Thank you Greg for sharing your story with us. We here at HONK NYC! appreciate your taking the time…looking forward to seeing you in a couple of weeks at the festival!!
